The first edition of the UCI CRC 506 Gran Fondo Bicycle race was officially declared of public interest and has the Essential Costa Rica seal, this for being an event of the International Cycling Union (UCI), the highest organization in world cycling, and the only direct classification event for the World Grand Fund Championship, which this year will be held in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Gran Fondo on national soil will be on June 4 and it is of massive participation, some 2 thousand competitive and amateur cyclists are expected between the ages of 19 and 80, divided by categories.
Combination of tourism and sport
“Currently, the combination of tourism and sport is becoming one of the most important attractions in the new tourist offer, since it is an expanding market and offers great economic benefits at the local and national level. In this type of tourism, sports and recreational activity constitutes a fundamental part, as well as the natural setting where it is projected, since more and more tourists want to have an active vacation, and cyclists from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, the United States and Canada have stated that they are coming to qualify for the World Championship”, specifies the document sent by ICODER.
With this declaration, the event has the support of municipal police, the Public Force and the Red Cross

The UCI CRC 506 Gran Fondo is the first national road cycling event of the International Cycling Union (UCI). The event will travel 122 kilometers, leaving the National Stadium entering Route 1 General Cañas and passing through the communities of Grecia, Sarchí, Naranjo, Esparza, to culminate in the Paseo de Los Turistas in Puntarenas.
It is categorized in the “Cycling for All” Chapter of the Regulations of the International Cycling Union (UCI) of the Gran Fondo World Series branch, and is organized by RPMTV/Xtreme Family Entertainment and has the endorsement of the Costa Rican Cycling Federation (FECOCI) and the sponsorship of the Government of the Republic of Costa Rica.
