The city of San José received the title of: “Ibero-American Capital of Cultures 2023″ by the Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities (UCCI). The title is conferred by the executive committee of the UCCI to one of its member cities, which for one year has the opportunity to show its development and cultural life.

Exhibiting the sublime production of the human spirit

“San José is, today, a city with museums, theaters, galleries, cafes, restaurants and multiple cultural spaces, where exceptional people, enlightened with the gifts of creativity, exhibit the sublime production of the human spirit”, said Johnny Araya, Mayor of San Jose. It previously obtained this same distinction in 2006, the Josefino municipality reported this past Thursday.

The UCCI confers this distinction since 1991 and it has been held by capitals such as: Buenos Aires in Argentina, Santiago de Chile, Bogotá in Colombia, Mexico City, among others. The award comes at the same time as the bicentennial of the capital of the Republic is commemorated.
