Eleven countries, including Brazil, Colombia, and Spain, joined on Friday ina joint declaration at COP30 in Belém to promote the decarbonization of the transport sector with specific and measurable targets for 2035.
In a document released by the Chilean government, which promoted the initiative, the signatory countries commit to reducing energy demand for transportation by 25% by 2035 and, in addition, to ensuring that one-third of the energy they use comes from renewable sources and sustainable biofuels.
The eleven countries that have signed the declaration to date are Austria, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, and Portugal.
The aim of the initiative is to decarbonize both passenger and freight transport systems and transform the industry into a more resilient, low-emission sector.
Chile’s Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz, highlighted the urgency of the measure, given that the transport sector “is still responsible for 23% of global CO2 emissions.”
The global climate conference in the Amazonian city of Belém is being held until the 21st, and decarbonization is one of the most controversial topics at this year’s event, with negotiators disagreeing on timelines, mechanisms, and financing.
