Costa Rica Celebrates 70th Anniversary of Its Labor Code

The Costa Rica News (TCRN) -Today the Government of Costa Rica celebrated the 70th anniversary of the country’s labor code, while the business sector urged changes that allow more flexible working hours.

The president of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, starred in a formal ceremony today in commemoration of the social reforms achieved in the 1940´s under President Rafael Angel Calderon Guardia, and the Communist leader Manuel Mora Valverde and Archbishop Victor Manuel Sanabria Martínez.It also marked the 85th anniversary of the creation of the Ministry of Labour.

On the other hand, the Costa Rican Union of Chambers and Associations of Private Enterprise (UCCAEP) urged the Government to implement changes to “modernize the workday” to adapt “to the new economic and social reality.” This would imply a shift from a legal day of 8 hours of work to four days of 12 hours of work and three days off.
