The event “Resonancia Afroguanacasteca” is organized by La Voz de Guanacaste and will take place on Saturday, October 10, at 4:30 p.m. at Parque Tempisque, Carrillo. The event is free of charge and requires prior registration.
The music, instruments, and stories that account for Guanacaste’s Afro-descendant roots will come together this coming Saturday, October 10, at Resonancia Afroguanacasteca, a free cultural experience organized by La Voz de Guanacaste that will celebrate its second edition at Parque Tempisque, Carrillo.
The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will combine an educational concert by the Ensamble Quijon-Ngóo, the screening of short films produced by La Voz de Guanacaste, and a panel discussion centered on Afro-Guanacastecan heritage and ongoing efforts to research, recover, and keep its cultural expressions alive.
Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about and listen closely to instruments linked to this tradition, as well as converse with researchers, musicians, and knowledge bearers.
Participants will include members of the Ensamble Quijon-Ngóo; José Cabalceta, a craftsman of quijongos and juques; and Milagro Obando Matarrita, a poet from Nicoya whose work has helped bring visibility to African heritage in the province.
This second edition is made possible thanks to the support of Parque Tempisque, which joins as host and partner to bring this experience closer to more people across Guanacaste.

For the second time, Coopeguanacaste sponsors Resonancia Afroguanacasteca, continuing its support for an initiative aimed at highlighting and sharing Afro-Guanacastecan roots with the public.

A Gathering to Listen and Experience
Through Resonancia Afroguanacasteca, La Voz aims to offer the public close contact with cultural expressions they usually experience only through written stories, research, or audiovisual products. During the event, attendees will be able to listen to the instruments, inspect them up close, and discover the stories behind their sounds.
One such instrument will be the juque, recovered from Afro-Guanacastecan tradition. A juque will be raffled among attendees during the event, with the intention of helping that sound find a new home beyond the stage. Noelia Esquivel Solano, Director of La Voz de Guanacaste, explained:
“At La Voz, we believe our work doesn’t end when we publish a story. We also want to create spaces where we can gather around those stories, hear them directly from the voices of those who sustain them, and bring them closer to new generations. Resonancia Afroguanacasteca stems from the idea that Afro-Guanacastecan culture shouldn’t just be something we talk about, but something we can experience, share, and live together as a community.”
Expanding into Carrillo marks a new step for Resonancia Afroguanacasteca. Its first edition was held in April in Nicoya, where nearly 60 people gathered around music, film, and conversation about Guanacaste’s Afro roots.
