The US Embassy announced on Thursday the suspension USAID money to Nicaragua.
The US Government was supplying $3 million in aid but suspended funds in response to the Nicaragua government’s dealings with Venezuelan and election process complaints in the 2011 elections.
The future of US-Nicaragua relations is in question and the economic effects could be disastrous for the regions second-poorest country.
The decision could affect Nicaragua’s ability to go forward on many initiatives, as the over $1.4 billion in development loans may be in jeopardy.
Hugo Chavez, who provided Nicaragua with $557 million in 2011 and more than $2 billion over the past five years, along with of Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is one Ortega’s only two friends.
