The Costa Rican photographer Luisana Calderón, a 21-year-old woman with Down syndrome, is currently exhibiting her first professional photographic showcase in Madrid. Through her display, she actively encourages other creatives to “follow your dreams, find your path, and trust in yourself,” sharing her firm conviction that structured effort and consistent perseverance unlock any personal or professional milestone.

Calderón shared these insights during an interview focused on the official inauguration of her exhibition in the Spanish capital. The gallery seamlessly blends vivid coastal landscapes, serene sunsets, everyday moments, and portraits captured during her formal artistic training in Madrid—a city she relocated to from Costa Rica to expand her technical skillset and cultivate greater personal independence.

The young artist discovered her innate passion for photography simply by observing her mother handle a camera. Seeing her mother experience true joy behind the lens inspired Luisana to venture into the medium, using it as a direct vehicle to document special moments and express her unique perspective.

Among her curated images, ocean-bound horizons and warm sunsets take center stage. As she notes, she is naturally drawn to marine environments because they convey a profound sense of “peace” and offer quiet spaces for reflection.大

“This exhibition brings a massive sense of pride. It gives me the opportunity to share the beautiful things I observe through my camera lens and show the world through my eyes.” Calderón draws artistic inspiration from raw, everyday occurrences, such as moving shadows, natural sunlight, or expressions on people’s faces, using them to evoke deep emotional memories. She expresses hope that visitors exploring her work leave with feelings of true happiness while appreciating the hard work underpinning her evolving career.

An Unstoppable Artistic Drive

When addressing critics who might openly question her professional capabilities, Calderón remains incredibly resolute. She defines herself as a dedicated individual who approaches every task with love, patience, and a sharp work ethic.

“I am entirely capable of doing everything I dream of,” she firmly states. Ultimately, she wants her platform to inspire other individuals living with disabilities or facing steep daily hurdles, encouraging them to confidently forge ahead, map their dreams, and maintain self-trust. She continuously highlights how vital it is to feel proud of your identity and lean on a supportive family network.
