In a landmark moment for Costa Rican visual arts and literature, renowned artist and writer Otto Apuy Sirias was awarded the prestigious Premio Nacional de Cultura Magón. The award, presented during a solemn ceremony at the iconic National Theatre of Costa Rica, represents the highest cultural honor bestowed by the Ministry of Culture and Youth.
Hailing from Cañas, Guanacaste, Apuy has dedicated over five decades to artistic exploration, mastering mediums ranging from conceptual art, drawing, and painting to poetry and prose. The jury recognized his profound impact on the nation’s aesthetic identity and his role as a pioneer in modern conceptual art within Costa Rica.
Upon receiving the award, Apuy celebrated his Guanacaste can roots and encouraged younger generations of artists to continuously explore, preserve, and reimagine the rich cultural narrative of Central America.
