    German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will travel to Costa Rica and Mexico between September 17th and 22nd to reaffirm Germany’s interest in deepening relations with Latin America, in a visit scheduled for 2020 and postponed due to the pandemic.

    “With this, it expresses its interest that Germany not turn its back on the rest of the world, especially in times of the Russian war in Europe, but that it expand its collaboration with countries that defend democracy, international law, exchange and cooperation,” he stresses.

    In San José, the capital of Costa Rica, Steinmeier will meet with Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves Robles and visit a German electronics manufacturer to get an idea of ​​the economic ties between the two countries.

    With his trip, Steinmeier also underlines “the interest in Costa Rica’s climate and environmental policy”, which covers its electricity consumption needs almost entirely with renewable energies, the statement said.

    In this regard, on the second day of his stay in Costa Rica, the German president will travel to the northwestern province of Guanacaste to visit a geothermal power plant, take an excursion through the adjacent national park in the volcanic zone and visit a research center for rocket technology and green hydrogen.

    Then on to Mexico

    In Mexico City, Steinmeier will meet with Mexican President Andrés Manuel LópezObrador and Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.In addition, he will accept honorary citizenship of Mexico City and deliver a speech in the Senate.

    “A fundamental pillar of the association between the two countries is the strong presence of more than 2,000 German companies in Mexico,” for which Steinmeier will meet with representatives of the German business community to discuss their prospects for cooperation.

    On the other hand, the German president will speak with relatives of the victims and those responsible for the National Search Commission about the problem of forced disappearances in Mexico.

    Steinmeier will also travel to Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco, to get an idea of ​​the city as World Book Capital 2022, as well as a center of innovation as the second largest city in Mexico.

    In Guadalajara, he will visit a production and research center of a German automotive supplier and discuss innovation with representatives from the business, scientific and political worlds.Finally, he will meet with creators from the world of culture in Guadalajara and attend a concert at the Hospicio Cabañas, Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
