Costa Rica’s air connectivity map will reach a historic milestone before the end of the year. For the first time in the history of national aviation, the country will have a direct, nonstop flight to one of the world’s most iconic cities, globally recognized as the venue for major international shows and events.

This new route, which had not been operated directly until now, sets a precedent in the diversification of markets within the United States, which remains the main source of tourists to Costa Rica.

Southwest Airlines has officially confirmed that, starting October 1, 2026, it will begin daily operations between Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) and Las Vegas, Nevada.

This connection will take off from Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) at 11:20 p.m., allowing travelers to land in Costa Rica at 6:00 a.m. the following day, after a flight of approximately seven hours.

Conversely, flights will depart from San José to the “Entertainment Capital” between noon and 1:00 p.m.

William Rodríguez, Minister of Tourism, pointed out that this flight represents “a strategic opportunity” to bring Costa Rica’s identity and natural wealth closer to a type of traveler accustomed to great global experiences, as well as providing Costa Ricans with direct and quick access to Nevada’s cultural and leisure offerings.

In 2025, the United States consolidated its leadership as a source of visitors to Costa Rica, registering the arrival of almost 1.6 million travelers by air. The commitment to Las Vegas seeks to capture a portion of that market that is looking for direct alternatives outside of traditional hubs such as Miami, Houston, or New York.

A Decade

The announcement is no coincidence. Southwest Airlines and Costa Rica are celebrating a ten-year relationship that began in 2015, when the airline chose our country as its first international destination in its history.

The airline also began flying to Guanacaste in November 2025.
