In a televised announcement Thursday, Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño said Ecuador will grant asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
The British government called the decision “regrettable,” and it has the legal authority to enter Ecuador’s embassy in London and arrest Assange
Ecuador made allegations that Britain threatened to “assault our embassy” if the WikiLeaks founder released to Britons custody.
Britain’s Foreign Office released a copy of the letter that Ecuador claims was a threat and the letter does say the British government reserves the authority to enter the embassy and take custody of Assange.
Assange has been in hiding in Ecuador embassy since June 19 avoiding extradition to Sweden, where he’s wanted on charges of sexual misconduct, and what Assange claims trumped up charges in an effort to silence him and WikiLeaks.
