How a Cosmic Magnifying Glass Revealed Galaxy “A1”

The newly identified object, designated as A1, is a distant galaxy whose light was bent, magnified, and stretched into a luminous arc by the colossal gravity of an intervening galaxy cluster known as MACS J0308.9+2645.

This phenomenon—known as gravitational lensing—acts as a natural cosmic magnifying glass, enabling astronomers to observe ultra-distant celestial bodies that would otherwise remain completely invisible.

According to Dávila—founder of SKYCR.org and the first Costa Rican fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society—candidate A1 immediately caught his attention due to three distinct criteria:

  • Extreme Elongation: The distinct stretched arc shape characteristic of deep gravitational lensing.
  • High Luminosity: Remarkable brightness despite its extreme cosmic distance.
  • Absence from Catalogs: Total absence from all major global astronomical databases and catalogs.

Verification and Peer Review

After performing independent photometric analysis, Dávila cross-referenced his findings with the official scientific teams responsible for the JWST observations. Specialists confirmed that the object had never been cataloged or studied before, verifying Dávila as its discoverer.

While modeling is still underway to finalize the galaxy’s parameters, a second potential arc candidate—designated A2—was also uncovered during the research and is currently undergoing evaluation.

“It is true that confirmation is still pending, but it is most likely a galaxy. Nobody had seen it before. It has already been confirmed to me via email that no one had investigated this object… In this first phase, what we have is confirmation that I am the discoverer.”

The study is currently undergoing peer review for official publication in the scientific journal Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan (PASJ).
