September Started with 5 Tremors in Guanacaste

The strongest quake measured 5.6 degrees on the Richter scale

Five tremors were reported this morning in Guanacaste. Four were reported in Samara – Nicoya and one in Tamarindo – Santa Cruz.

The strongest tremor occurred at 1:42 am with a 5.6 magnitude on the Richter scale. It has a 16 kilometer magnitude and occurred specifically 17 kilometers in Northeastern Samara, according to the National Seismological Network.

The next earthquake happened 6 minutes later at 1:47 am in Northeastern Samara. It measured 4.0 on the Richter scale.

Prior to these seismological events, the first tremor was reported at midnight. The epicenter was located 15 kilometers in Northwestern Samara, Nicoya and measured 3.4 degrees at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The fourth quake happened at 2:27 am. The magnitude was 3.6 degrees and the epicenter was 15 kilometers in Northwestern Samara.

Besides that, a fifth tremor occured but this time in Northwestern Tamarindo. It measured 3.7 degrees on the Richter scale and happened at 2:32 am.

In August, the National Seismological Network reported 186 quakes, 14 of which were perceived by the Costa Rican population.
