The “Rincón de la Vieja” (Old Lady’s Corner) National Park, located in the volcanic mountain range of Guanacaste, at the height of the city of Liberia, also known as the “White City” because the lava and emanations of this volcano form a white structure and Liberia is based on it.

From the geological point of view, the Rincón de la Vieja massif is a composite structure. It is, basically, an active volcano stratum that is located in a volcanic massif of 1,920 meters above sea level and presents 9 eruptive foci. To the south of this crater, there is a lagoon of pure water that has an area of ​​2.5 hectares and is the crater of the “Santa María” Volcano.

Here, there are several hot springs. These give rise to very hot streams; sulphatic lagoons occupied by small depressions in which the muddy water bubbles continuously; holes where steam jets rise -particularly during the rainy season; and mud volcanoes of varied shapes and dimensions.
