Rio +20 – The president of Cuba, Raul Castro, spoke to the destruction of nuclear stockpiles and promoting the disarmament of nations, during his speech at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio +20, Brazil.
Castro also noted that the oil wars unleashed in the Middle East, “will be added” in the future for control of water and “other resources are being depleted.”
Continuing, he talked on that climate change may lead to “millions starving “.
Castro recalled that climate change will produce the “gradual and substantial” rise in sea level, affecting Cuba, and also increase the frequency of tropical cyclones and increased salinization of groundwater.
Regarding the outcome of the Rio +20, he said we need to reflect on the lack of political will and inability to take action in the rich countries, “despite the extraordinary efforts of Brazil” in reaching an agreement.
