The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – A new species of mollusk received its name in honor of Coco’s Island, where it was discovered. The species was identified in April of 2010 and subsequent research confirmed that it is a completely new species.

Now named Caecum cocoense was located by researcher Jeffrey Sibaja Lamb and other partners during a visit to the park. After extensive testing, it was recorded in two international journals, with Italy and Spain echoing the discovery.

It was early this year when researchers realized that their discovery would be published and recognized beyond our borders.

“They are microscopic mollusks, which differ to others who are in the Pacific for the way they look and behave,” said the researcher.

Sibaja works as professor for the School of Biology at UCR and the Center for Research in Marine Sciences and Limnology.

Marine mollusks are one of the most common species found on Cocos Island. According to information from the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), there are about 600 species of marine mollusks in that locality, of which 7.5% are characterized as endemic.
