The Eugene O’Neill Theater will be the stage where children and adults can enjoy a new version of Hansel and Gretel in September. This time, the production is brought to you by Akelarre CR Producciones, under the direction of Sofía Chaverri. The original music is by composer Fabián Arroyo.
From the outset, this adaptation seeks to differentiate itself with a local touch. Hansel and Gretel enter a forest where a friendly sloth, inspired by Costa Rican wildlife, appears.
In addition, this character brings tenderness and humor to a story that combines fantasy, comedy, and family values. All without losing the essence of the classic German tale.
However, the protagonists must also confront the traditional witch of the candy store. This twist maintains the suspense and reinforces the story’s emotion. The production will feature a double cast. In the children’s version, Gretel will be played by Maricer Picado and Hansel by Mateo Quesada.
Meanwhile, in the adult cast, the lead roles will be played by Ariana Rodríguez and Jean Jiménez. The witch will be played by Gabriela Alfaro. Likewise, the role of the father will be played by Miguel Mejía. The endearing sloth will be brought to life thanks to the talent of Mildred Ramírez.
It is worth noting that Maricer Picado, who plays Gretel in the children’s version, began her artistic career at an early age. With this production, the director seeks to connect with Costa Rican families through humor and cultural closeness. She expressed this at a press conference.
Costa Rican elements
“This is how we present the story of Hansel and Gretel, now with Costa Rican elements, Costa Rican music, and lots of comedy for the whole family,” said Chaverri.
