Former President of Costa Rica Jose Maria Figueres Olsen San Jose Costa Rica [TCRN] – This week Former President of Costa Rica Jose Maria Figueres Olsen (1994-1998) introduced a project that consists of a referendum on which, together with a group of experts, aims to design a new “country plan” which he called ” The Costa Rican way. “
This project, which is Figueres own initiative, has no political agenda with a view to the 2014 elections, but claims that the solutions to the country’s problems arise from the citizens themselves.
Figueres said at a press conference, there are successful examples in the world, whose population has been unable to agree and define a direction, something that in its opinion, missing in Costa Rica.
“The Costa Rica way is an invitation to write new pages in the history of the country,” said Figueres.
“We have not had much success looking for structural changes from the government (…) I do not think that all solutions have to come from the government, that’s an old way of doing politics and understanding of democracy. It is time to do other things from civil society, “he said.
According to the former president, they already formed a working group about “The way Costa Rican” and will put forward proposals on issues like education, health, democracy, environment, economy and community spaces.
Figueres who lives in Madrid, returned to Costa Rica last December after 11 years away for his work in international organizations and by an investigation against him for alleged corruption in a consulting firm conducted for Alcatel, which was eventually shelved.
