    Fast Food Chains Add to Economic Recovery

    The popular fast food chains McDonald’s, KFC, Quiznos, Burger King, Church’s Chicken, Papa John’s, Campero, Taco Bell and Wendy’s are planning on opening 29 new restaurants in 2010, with the majority being in the Greater San Jose Metro Area.

    McDonald’s has already begun with the opening of its 35th location Sunday in Los Desamparados.

    Paola Badilla, of the Golden Arches enterprise-U.S. dealership chain, said that this required a local investment of nearly $ 1million and created 46 new direct jobs.

    The second new store in the chain will open its doors this weekend in the new stage of Multiplaza Escazú. It measures 165m² and cost $800,000 and unlike other locations in the malls, this McDonald’s will have McCafe and bathrooms.

    As for the remaining four facilities, Badilla would not disclose the locations by claiming “strategic reasons” but said that between them they will require 185 new employees.

    Stephanie Charpentier, of King Food Corporation (Burger King, Papa John’s and Church’s Chicken), said she is opening nine locations distributed between the three brands in this 2010, three from each brand.

    The corporation plans to open new locations both inside and outside the San Jose Area, the executive said, adding that the investment for each new store ranges from $300,000 to $1 million.

    Additionally, the company has just finished remodeling the restaurant located in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, with a new brand image.

    Charpentier said the remodeling required the outlay of $500,000 and includes signage, furniture and paint.

    Tatiana Rojas of Campero, explained that plan to open five new restaurants: two in the Greater Metro Area and three in rural areas, but did not specify the places.

    He said the company will invest $2.5 million in the openings, scheduled for the year, while indicating that each store will generate 15 new jobs.

    For its part, the corporation representing the chains KFC, Quiznos and Teriyaki plan to open three stores in the first phase and two in the second, said Pablo Fernandez, manager of expansion.

    For KFC, the three establishments will be in Avenida Escazú, Plaza Mayor (Pavas) and Carthage center. Investment in the three is close to $ 2million and will employ over 50 people.

    The larger the local Carthage (300m²) and open its doors in March and April to customers.

    As for Quiznos, the chain will open its second location in downtown Josefino.
