Whether you believe in the 2012 Winter Solstice Mayan Doomsday prophecy or not, the mysteries surrounding the Mayan calendar are real and fascinating.

The Mayan calendar is based upon a unique system which had been in use throughout the Central American region dating back to at least the 5th century BCE, and is still in use in some areas of Central America especially in Guatemala.

    In a nutshell:

The Mayan calendar consists of several interrelated cycles or counts of different lengths. The larger count is 260 days called the Tzolkin combined with a 365 day solar year called the Haab, forming a cycle called the calendar round.

Smaller cycles of 13 days and 20 days complete the Mayan Calendar.

Mayan astrology is fascinating in that your Mayan astrological sign reflected the energy pulse that was emanating from the center of the spiraling galaxy at the moment of your birth.
Of course that begs the question… how did they know they were in a spiraling galaxy over 5,000 years ago? They knew back then without telescopes, how to map the cycles of the earth in relation to the center of the Milky Way galaxy and able to map these cycles out for the next 5,000 + years.

The winter solstice December 21, 2012, was mapped in 3114 BC, and the count ends 5,125 years later, this winter solstice.

They somehow understood over 5,000 years ago, that the Earth was going to pass through the elliptic plane of the Milky Way, or the Galactic Equator.

    The 2012 Phenomenon:

Today marks the first day of summer, or the Summer Solstice, arriving Wednesday, June 20 at 17:08:08 (in San Jose Costa Rica). However, the day holds another meaning for some. Those that are believers in the Mayan Doomsday Countdown, it is the six-month mark until the Winter Solstice on Dec. 21, the date that many believe the world will end.

The two camps of The 2012 Phenomenon are the “new agers’ vs. the scientists.

The Scientists: The Mayans never predicted doomsday, that new agers misinterpreted the meaning of the end of the 13th Baktun (the 13th cycle of the Long Count calendar), not interpreting it as a time of re-birth, but as a time of death and destruction.

The New Agers: We are running out of time. The world ends when the Mayan Calendar ends.

Ok, that’s simplifying it, as you would see if you jumped into the controversy of the 2012 Phenomenon.

Just plug ‘Mayan calendar’ into Google and you’ll be able to research the topic for next 5,123 years.

Some believe when the long count cycle ends it simply starts over, other see it as an entering into a new age (Age of Aquarius), and others as the Doomsday Date.
Whether you believe in the 2012 Doomsday date or not, there are some fascinating aspects to the topic, no matter what camp you fall in.
