The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) announced a U.S. television campaign to promote the country as a destination during broadcasts of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

According to ICT, the goal is to reach 158 million U.S. viewers on NBC with a total of 267 ads for attractions in Costa Rica, which represents an investment of $1,000,000.

The campaign began today and will run until February 23, with the hope to attract tourists from “key markets” of the United States such as New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago and Seattle.

The Costa Rican Tourism Minister, Allan Flores, said in a statement that this campaign aims to “stimulate interest in visiting Costa Rica and to encourage the destination.”

“This exhibition of ‘Essential Costa Rica’ (national brand) during an event of great importance such as the Winter Olympics, positions the brand but also helps to reach a broad and diverse audience, who have a love for sports and adventure,” highlighted Flores.

United States remains the largest source of tourists to Costa Rica with a total of 929,402 in 2013, representing 40% of all visits, according to official data.

Costa Rica, a country of 4.7 million inhabitants and home to 4.5% of the planet’s biodiversity, received a total of 2.34 million tourists generating foreign exchange for 2.3 billion dollars in 2013. (ACAN-EFE)
