Nicaraguan Sex Worker Organization Celebrates Seven Years of Women’s Rights Accomplishments

The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The Association of Nicaraguan Working Women in the Sex Industry (Nicaragua RedTraSex) today celebrated seven years of fighting for their rights.

“For seven years we’ve raised our voices together for our rights, and we have achieved great accomplishments,” said RedTraSex in a statement.

The organization was formed on November 29, 2007 to find solutions for the “serious abuse and human rights violations” that sex workers face.

Among their achievements, RedTraSex negotiated a resolution with the Ministry of Health which helped reduce discrimination and increase the quality of care for sex workers.

They also have a seat on the board of the Coordinating Committee on HIV/AIDS, which works with the Nicaraguan AIDS Commission. This year they have also helped to shape the Human Trafficking Act.

“We have new challenges to reach in other areas, but we have demonstrated that we can make important contributions to change,” stated RedTraSex.

In Nicaragua there are 14,486 sex workers, 14% of which are associated with the RedTraSex. (ACAN-EFE)
