The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The number of people covered by some type of insurance through the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) reaches 85% of the population, a figure that remained unchanged from the same period last year.

This percentage comes from the National Household Survey, released by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC).

In relation to direct insurance taxpayers who have the Disability and Death or sickness and maternity scheme (or both) represents 38.3% of the population, which in turn allows extended health insurance coverage to 39.4% of the population by securing their family.

Urban areas contain the largest number of groups of directly insured contributors compared to rural areas (30.6%), however, relatives of direct insured are less in urban (37.7%) than in rural (42.1%).

Likewise, the various non-contributory schemes see more coverage in rural areas (10.2%) than in urban areas (6.4%).
