In a report by the Commissioner for Women in Nicaragua, said that for crimes related to violence against women in the first quarter of 2013 increased 30%.
Commissioner Isabel Largaespada said the increase is due to changes to the law 779, which address violence against women.
Between January and March 2013 in Nicaragua there were a total of 8,768 complaints of battered women, compared to 6,706 in 2012, equivalent to 30% more than last year.
779 The law imposes penalties of up to 30 years who commit violence against women and mediation does not allow women even forgive the man.
In the past years organized crime, narco trafficking, and armed robbery took precedence in the legal systems of many Central American countries but in recent years, governments of these countries have had to focus on what was often considered less crime, such as domestic violence, because of international pressure from a growing number of NGO’s that have put pressure and brought public awareness to the issue.
