Last night legislators approved the new Costa Rica traffic law with fines of nearly half of the amounts that have been in effect.
Higher penalty of ¢ 280,000 will be applied to those who drive over 120 miles per hour, Also for those who enter the opposite lane and anyone who makes illegal U turns.
Drivers who have child passengers without a proper child safety chair will be subject a ¢ 189,000 fine.
The alcohol legal limits are different for those working as drivers and regular drivers. In the first case, the punishment is ¢ 280,000 from 0.2 grams of alcohol per liter of blood and up to three years in prison if the alcohol limit is over 0.5.
For regular drivers, the same penalty applies if a level higher than of 0.5 grams of alcohol is reached and jail penalty if the level is more than 0.75 grams of alcohol per liter of blood.
