The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – As of yesterday, an executive order by  President Luis Guillermo Solís to lift the ban on procedural labor reform will prohibit strikes in essential public services.

He explained that the reform has an 18 month transition period and will enter into force in May 2016. Solis declared that the decree will ban strikes in all police forces and emergency services such as hospitals.

He added that strikes must now be submitted to Labor Court 30 days before they are made, and that the judge must approve a reorganization plan for the institution to avoid the impacting the public.

The first draft of the decree was presented on Thursday night, but the president requested a new version, which is expected to be ready no later than next Tuesday to sign and send to publication in La Gaceta. (Amelia Rueda)
