The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – A new bill seeks to reform the Penal Code, subjecting anyone who tortures a child to between 5 and 12 years in prison.
It is an initiative presented on Thursday by deputy for the National Restoration Party, Fabricio Alvarado , who believes there should be stronger sanctions to prevent child abuse.
The deputy presented the project after the death of a child under 2 years in the Los Chiles due to the blows he received. The autopsy revealed that the minor had been tortured for several months.
“I hope that all factions support us to improve the protection we provide to this population,” Alvarado said.
It also proposes that the penalties for sexual abuse of children range from 6-12 years in prison as well.
The proposal will go to a committee to be discussed in the legislative plenary.

A march to prevent child abuse that is sponsored and supported by The Costa Rica News will take place on the 15th of February (9:00am) in the Metropolitan Park La Sabana in downtown San Jose. Everybody who would like to join us and stand up against child maltreatment is invited.
