The International Court of Justice in The Hague announced last Tuesday, that it would process the two disputes face Costa Rica with Nicaragua border conflict in one case, a in decision made last week.

The complaint started in 2010 by Nicaragua dredging the river San Juan and infringing in Costa Rican territory by Nicaraguan Navy, and second by the the construction of the Border Trail which is a ” violation ” by Costa Rica of Nicaraguan sovereignty in the common border area.

The case against Costa Rica regarding the Border Trail is becoming something that is much more complex to defend, because by joining the two cases. One is an infringement into territory, a much easier case to prove while the other is a complaint about environmental damage and impact of a trail road that is that is solely on the Costa Rican side of the river.

At the international level that the only countries in the world that have chosen to put road along the entire border are the two Koreas and Israel on the border with Syria, Egypt and Jordan, all of which have conflicting situations and countries highly militarized.

The Hague’s decision to combine the 2 cases into one issue seems to have further complicated the issues at hand essentially prolonging a diplomatic solution to the problems at hand that face Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
