“Environment in Limon is very tense,” says Director of Security Forces.
Limon Costa Rica [TCRN] – “The situation in Limón has turned … with acts of vandalism against union officials that in the province.” said John Joseph Andrade, Director of the security forces,. Therev incidents in several villages of Limon last night, where officials answered at least 100 incidents between distress calls, blocks and arson.
“The atmosphere is very tense, there were bursts of gunfire last night against the officers, vandalizing electrical service bring down the lights in the town of Cieneguita, and several fires. “said Andrade.
More than 500 officers were on guard in Limon near the port and neighboring towns since Wednesday night, when the strike began. The authorities remain in the area and expect the atmosphere to tone down. The Government is adamant about not negotiating with the unions while the strike in force.
Andrade calls for calm. “We are facing a very different situation to what we experience in previous days.” he said.
The director of the Armed Forces of Limon, Marlon Cubillo, said several small explosions and firearm shots are reported in several places and there are several arrests but no injuries.
For its part, the unions say they continue to protest the government for the modernization of ports and the contract with APM Terminals.
