The humble and tropical coconut: we couldn’t live without it. Utilized by the culinary industry for its rich cream and sweet flesh, its aromatic fragrance also means that it belongs to the beauty and cosmetics industry as well.

It is such a versatile fruit but the perception of the coconut is changing as a new fad takes hold: drinking coconut water.

Now readily available in most supermarkets, coconut water is a drink that helps your body reap the benefits of Mother Nature at an entirely new level. Extracted from young green coconuts, the water contains benefits for nearly every part of your body since it is high in potassium, anti-oxidants and fiber.

    How does it compare?

Unlike coconut milk and oil, which is taken from more mature coconuts, young coconut water is naturally low in fat and acts as an appetite suppressant meaning that you can lose weight, feeling a reduction in cravings and feeling fuller for longer. That’s all down to the high fiber content of the juice which also means that coconut water can help ease digestion and bloating as a result.

Not eating a lot of fruits, vegetable and dairy products can put your body at a serious disadvantage when it comes to controlling heart functions and the balance of fluids in the body. This is because the body is lacking in potassium – a mineral which is known to be high in bananas. But, in fact, coconut water contains almost 4 times the amount of potassium that our treasured yellow fruits do, which helps to fill in the nutritional deficiencies in our diets. And, what’s more, potassium as well as the anti-oxidants carried by coconut water, help to maintain clear and oil-free skin.

    Make the Switch

So, it seems that coconut water is a must for a healthy diet and happy body, but how can you incorporate it into your diet?

The most obvious solution seems to be to drink it. A glass of this refreshing and sweet juice is only 45-60 calories and is a perfect way to wake up in the morning.

Alternatively, try replacing normal water with coconut water when boiling vegetables, steaming rice or in stock. Not only will this help you to easily attain the multiple health benefits of this natural juice but it will also pack in the flavor for your meal.

Apparently, a much revered habit in certain regions of India, coconut water can also be used to wash your face. Believing that the coconut water further helps to prevent oily skin and allows for clear skin in another dimension, this unusual but healthy morning routine will ensure that you use coconut water the its best potential.

So why not give it a go today?
