The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – A total of 1,025 vehicle owners were fined for not carrying the marchamo corresponding to 2014, according to the Ministry of Public Works (MOPT).

The Road Traffic Act provides for a fine of 47,000 colones and removal of the car plates for those who are caught without the registration certificate. Each passing day the vehicle owner must pay 0.13% more for fines.

Guillermo Constenla, CEO of the National Insurance Institute (INS) said they are still missing 178,000 vehicle owners marchamo payment, but they are keeping in mind that not many people don’t pay because their trucks are not working.

Constenla further stated that of the total 165 billion colones they expected to collect, the INS has raised approximately 147 billion, which means that there is still more than 11% receivable.

Until last Friday, most payments were registered owners of private cars, taxis and light load.
