San Jose – Costa Rica authorities arrested seven Nepalese and a Costa Rican for smuggling, official sources reported.
The incident occurred Sunday in southern Costa Rica near the border with Panama, when security forces stopped a vehicle driven by a Costa Rican and carrying the seven Nepalese.
“ the police reportedly believe that crime is the coyote (human trafficking),” said in a statement by the Ministry of Security.
Authorities are investigating the case and suspect that the group of Nepalese came from a country in South America and heading for San Jose, the Costa Rican capital.
Foreign nationals are detained while their immigration status is resolved, said the Ministry of Security.
The driver is in custody and is suspected of the crime of human trafficking, which is punishable with up to eight years in prison.
