The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Police Drug Enforcement Costa Rica (PCD) announced today that they seized $552,400 which was being transported by a vehicle.
The incident took place on Tuesday in the community of Rio Frio, in the Limón Province(Caribbean), where authorities were conducting routine surveillance on the roads, said the Ministry of Security in a statement.
“When the police officers stopped a white van, driven by a subject named Víquez Ramirez, they said the subject behaved nervously, insisting he was in a hurry,” the statement said.
Following a search of the vehicle, they found $552,400 hidden under the passenger seat. After finding the money, the subject tried to offer the police a bribe, says the official version.
Víquez is now in custody and will face charges for the crime of money laundering, which is punishable in Costa Rica with a maximum of 20 years in prison.
The authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the origin and final destination of the money. (ACAN-EFE)
