The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – In the first half of 2014, the authorities of Social Adaptation will create 1,200 spaces intended to reduce overcrowding in the prison system.
Prisons in Liberia, Perez Zeledon, and Pococí will be the first locations to be expanded due to the amount of prisoners they hold.
“In these months we have the first projects to allow at least 1,200 new spaces in extensions to be held in different prisons,” said the Director of Social Adaptation, Reynaldo Quirós.
According to Quirós, they have gotten approval from the Comptroller General of the Republic (CGR) for direct recruitment in some projects and to expedite the construction of the new modules.
Quirós added another project involving a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) seeks to open spaces in infrastructure to 2,700 spaces. The official stressed that the results of this loan could be visualized through 2015.
