The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Police Drug Enforcement Costa Rica (PCD) seized $375,000 that was hidden in a secret compartment of a bus coming from Mexico, said the Ministry of Security.
The incident occurred during a review conducted on Monday by agents of the PCD when the bus, from the local business Ticabus, intended to enter Costa Rica from Nicaragua by the Peñas Blancas border post.
“Upon inspection of the bus a double bottom was located and within this there were 32 packages containing $20 bills wrapped in clear plastic and grey duct tape,” said the Security Ministry said in a statement.
The bus served the route between Mexico and Costa Rica, and was led by a Costa Rican named Loria, who has a history of theft and fraud, and is now being held on suspicion of the crime of money laundering and related activities.
This offense is punished in Costa Rica with a maximum of 20 years in prison.
Authorities are investigating the case to determine what the final destination of the money and its purpose. (EFE)
