The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Costa Rican Social Security along with cooperating medical facilities will be introducing a series of programs in regards to teen pregnancy, with the goal of reducing the emotional and socioeconomic impact that having a child at a young age can cause.
In Costa Rica, 20% of children born annually have a teenage as a mother.
Dr. Alba Alarcón of the Medical Comprehensive Care Program of Adolescent Safety said that in Aserrí they are drafting a prevention and awareness program to prevent teens from getting pregnant.
The Max Peralta Hospital will present a strategy that was implemented to attract teenagers and pregnant mothers to the hospital and then develop a strategy for monitoring them and providing special attention and resources.
Also, the Clodomiro Picado Clinic in Tibás will be providing training for parents of adolescents to promote and strengthen family protection factors such as assertive communication and understanding.
The Tony Facio Hospital in Limon developed a project aimed at preventing a second pregnancy and to recruit teenage mothers to be incorporated into an educational support group for sexual health information and reproductive health.
