Costa Rica’s specialty coffee industry has achieved a monumental milestone, wrapping up the 19th edition of the prestigious Cup of Excellence (CoE) with the strongest financial and competitive results seen in recent years. Global buyers competed fiercely during the international live auction, driving the market value for premium Costa Rican micro-lots to historic heights.

A Historic Price Surge

The standout highlight of the 2026 auction was an unprecedented peak price of $200.10 per pound. This figure represents more than double the maximum price achieved during the 2025 event, which topped out at $91.00 per pound. This extraordinary jump demonstrates a surging global demand and an increased willingness by international connoisseurs to pay premium rates for exceptional cup quality.

In total, the auction generated a gross revenue of $797,967.63. The overall average price across all winning entries climbed to $45.53 per pound—marking a remarkable 48% increase compared to the average price of the previous year’s event.

Global Bidding and Lot Diversity

Specialized buyers from across the globe registered a total of 4,726 individual bids for the 30 award-winning Costa Rican coffees that successfully qualified for the final auction catalog. The selection highlighted the rich biodiversity and processing innovation currently driving the national coffee landscape.

The 30 recognized lots were distributed across three main preparation types:

  • Washed / Washed Coffees (8 Lots): Offering classic clean, bright, and highly transparent flavor profiles.
  • Honey & Natural Processes (12 Lots): Celebrated for eco-friendly resource use, deep fruit notes, and a heavy body.
  • Experimental Fermentations (10 Lots): Pushing avant-garde boundaries with anaerobic and yeast-inoculated environments to yield complex, highly exotic cup profiles.

Celebrating the Producers

The success underscores the relentless evolution of Costa Rican agricultural practices, which have increasingly pivoted toward highly meticulous processing methods to differentiate themselves in a competitive global economy.

“Behind each of these coffees are years of hard work, innovation, learning, and a commitment to quality. This recognition belongs to the farming families who continue to elevate Costa Rica’s name and demonstrate the extraordinary level of our coffee to the world.” — Noelia Villalobos, Executive Director of the Fine Coffees Association of Costa Rica
