The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The Costa Rican authorities have seized nearly 9,000 illegal weapons, mostly in the hands of criminals, since 2011, announced the Security Ministry.
Mostly of the seized arsenal includes pistols, revolvers and shotguns, but they have also captured war weapons like machine guns. According to official reports, seizures include 353 shotguns (12 gauge mainly), 785 “makeshift” firearms, 130 explosives of various kinds such as fragmentation grenades and rockets, 20 submachine guns, and 596 rifles, including AK 47s, which are sent to the National Arsenal for destruction.
Security Minister Mario Zamora said these seizures have a positive impact on national security, because these are the weapons that would be used in most cases to commit crimes. Police records indicate that over 75% of assaults and robberies in Costa Rica are committed with illegal firearms.
Zamora said that so far this year, they have destroyed 9,763 firearms. Since 2011, they have destroyed a total of 15,113 weapons, said Zamora. (EFE)
