(TCRN) The Costa Rica News – During the month of June a total of 22 earthquakes were reported in the country, and half of them were related to the movement of subduction of the Cocos plate under the Caribbean plate. These were recorded in the North Pacific and Central Pacific regions.
Two of these events, one located in Zarcero and another in Varablanca in Heredia were 67.7 km and 96.1 km deep respectively. The others were of intermediate depth.
In regards to earthquakes caused by tectonic faults, 11 were reported in Orosi and Paraiso of Cartago, Coronado, Sixaola, Talamanca, Jaco and Laurel de Corredores.
The largest earthquakes in June took place on the 15th and 23rd. The first one was located in the Pacific coast of Nicaragua and was felt moderately in the northwest region of Guanacaste ( 6.2 on the Richter Scale), whereas the second one was located 16 km NorthWest of Samara, in Nicoya (5.5 on the Richter Scale). This last one was strongly felt in Guanacaste but mildly perceived in the Central Valley.
All June earthquakes in Costa Rica were of moderate magnitude (between 2.9 and 5.5 on the Richter Scale) and no damage was reported. (SU)
