The public elementary school in Potrero has received a grant of $2200 for repairs and renovation through a Mardis Gras event held in Playa Potrero.

Each year in the Playa Potrero area of Costa Rica, a Mardis Gras Committee organizes a large parade that charges a fee for cars and pick-up trucks to strut their stuff through the streets.ย  But the event consists of more than just beer drinking, loud music and partying. The parade is also meant to be an overall community building project. Therefore, this year the committee has donated $2200 to Playa Potreroโ€™s own community driven nonprofit organization, Abriendo Mentes. The organization Abriendo Mentes aims to pull the people of Potrero out of poverty through education and works closely with the elementary school.

Abriendo Mentes said it would like to provide a lasting contribution to a school that needs more than a touch-up paint job. The nonprofit organization has already planned a construction project that includes extermination of termites, roof repair, and screening of the open side wall.

With the new repairs, heavy rain hopefully wonโ€™t keep the pupils from their education.
