    Costa Rican Government Issues Official Statement in Response to Venezuelan Politicians’ Request for Asylum

    The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The Costa Rica government has expressed concern about recent events in Venezuela, calling for dialogue where “democratic balances” are guaranteed.

    The Costa Rican Foreign Ministry said in a statement that they are deeply concerned about what is happening in Venezuela, and reiterated the call to “prosecute the channels of dialogue and understanding among Venezuelans.”

    Costa Rica “underscores the importance of present and create the conditions so that, as a full democracy, democratic balances of power are exercised”.

    The statement also said that “with effective conditions for the opposition to develop their actions. At the same time, it must act within the framework of legality and respect, assuming responsibly for their actions.”

    This statement came hours after the country’s congress passed a motion in which he urged the government to comment on the situation in Venezuela and consider offering asylum to opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez and the mayor of Caracas, Antonio Ledezma who are detained.

    The Costa Rican Congress also condemned the existence of “political prisoners” in Venezuela.

    The motion was approved with 30 deputies in favor and 20 against of the 50 lawmakers present at the Congress, with 57 seats total.

    Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has promised an “iron fist” against those allegedly conspiring against his government, while the opposition rejects coup allegations and claims that they are a ploy to distract public attention from the problems of scarcity and alleged corruption in the oil rich country.
