The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – About one million students will participate in civic events and parades on September 15, day in which Costa Ricans celebrate their 192 anniversary of the declaration of independence.
This year schools will have the holiday on September 16, according to the coordinator of the National Holidays Committee of the Ministry of Public Education (MEP), Giselle Cruz. The coordinator also stated that these activities are listed in the schools´ calendar, and that shools which do not participate in traditional parades prepare a civic ceremony to conmemorate the event. “It is customary to celebrate with parades on the streets and civic ceremonies at schools”, she stated.
In Costa Rica this celebration starts the day before September 15th with an evening parade of homemade lanterns. These represent the night in which the news of Independence from Spain were brought to Costa Rica, in 1821.
