The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The Drug Enforcement Police of Costa Rica seized 140 kilos of cocaine on the border of Nicaragua said the Ministry of Public Security (MPS).
The seizure occurred at the Peñas Blancas border crossing with Nicaragua, when officers found drugs in the cooling area of a truck during a routine check.
Agents found 139 packages with about 140 kilos of cocaine. The truck driver, a Costa Rican named Valverde, was arrested.
The truck, which belongs to Costa Ricans whose identities were not disclosed, was carrying black tea and headed for the Costa Rican province of Heredia, and then taking the Costa Rica-El Salvador route.
During 2013, a total of 19.8 tons of cocaine were seized in Costa Rica, which is the most since 2010.
The authorities note that last year, four kilos of heroin, 4.1 tons of marijuana were also seized and 1,540,625 marijuana plants were destroyed. (ACAN-EFE)
