The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Costa Rica has at least 93,007 farms active in crop and livestock production, according to the latest report from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) that helps to create public policies related to agriculture.

The National Agricultural Census, carried out by INEC between June and October last year, revealed that the country has at least 93,007 farms engaged in agricultural and livestock production, and the largest number is in the province of Alajuela (central) with 25,179.

San Jose is in second place with 18,881 farms, Puntarenas (Central Pacific) with 14,435, Guanacaste (North Pacific) with 10,856, Cartago (central) which closed with 9,552, Limón (Caribbean) features 9,011 and in last place was Heredia (central) with 5,093.

The census was also able to identify 38,015 spaces with agricultural production that are not farms, such as families with a cow who use it for their own consumption of milk.

This data will serve to create a base in the Geographic Information System (GIS) that has the location of farms, which will delve into research for this sector.

According to official figures, in 1984 101,938 farms were counted, so the study is “fundamental to the evaluation of public and private policies, planning sector employment, poverty reduction, gender equality, food security, environmental sustainability, and land use planning, among others,” cited INEC.

In May, INEC will announce the overall results of the census and in the second half draw opportunities for analysis and dissemination activities.

The work was done in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), and agricultural sector and producer organizations. (ACAN-EFE)
