The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Over 40% of mobile phone users in Costa Rica have a “smart” device and most of them expressed satisfaction with their operators, according to a survey released today.

The Superintendency of Telecommunications (Sutel) said today in a statement that the Demoscopía survey found that 40.3% of users have a smartphone and 80.2% of them have Internet connections above 1 Mbps (megabits per second).

The study also indicates that 76.8% of respondents reported not having frequent problems with the mobile internet service and 71.3% said they were satisfied with the time that faults were fixed.

Furthermore, the level of satisfaction with the service is between 70.8% and 81.6%, depending on the mobile operator.

The survey was conducted during the last quarter of 2013 to a sample of 5,038 active users over 15 years. The company interviewed a minimum of 1,000 users of each mobile operator in the country.

The study has a confidence level of 95% and a margin of error of 1.38%.

Currently in Costa Rica there are five mobile phone companies: Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), the Spanish Movistar, Claro Mexican, local Tuyo Mobile and Fullmóvil.

ICE held the monopoly of telecommunications in Costa Rica for over 60 years until 2011 when the market was opened to private competition. (ACAN-EFE)
