The local government of San Jose (MSJ) is hoping to finish the bicycle path, which connects the center of the capital with La Sabana and San Pedro (University of Costa Rica) this year. To do this it has a budget around 200,000 colones.

In March 2015 the second stage began which connected Merced Park with the Legislative Assembly. However, they had to pause while the Department of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) approved the redesign of the project, which includes extensions for the future, said Marco Corrales, Manager of Provision and Services of the MSJ.

“Three weeks ago we were talking with the Deputy Minister of the MOPT, we presented the design and were planning a meeting together,” Corrales added. They are now waiting to designate the successor to Deputy Minister Sebastian Urbina, who left his post the previous week.

    Preparation:

The MSJ is waiting for the MOPT to approve new designs. Meanwhile, they continue purchasing paint and design elements for the project.

“We are a little concerned about who is going to take the place of Deputy Minister Urbina, who was the one that met with us. We are waiting to sit down with a new person and go over the details and start the remaining work,” said Corrales.

According to an official, the remaining part of the project has had good reception.

The local government intends to continue the bicycle path in the Assembly-UCR stage which would have a greater number of users. But we do not have an approximate of how many people would use the space.

Corrales said that the bike lane will be an option for people to not use public transport and reduce the use of their vehicles.
