The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Towed vehicles or plates retained by the traffic police from December 24 through January 4, 2015 cannot be recuperated until January 5 because during this time all offices of the Road Safety Council (Cosevi) are closed.
As reported by the Cosevi, new plates, licenses and payment for fines will be offered at all Cosevi locations as usual on Monday and Tuesday, and then on Wednesday, December 24 they will be open until noon.
The legal director of Cosevi, Carlos Rivas, said that during this time many cars are impounded due to tourists leaving their automobiles in tow zones and driving while under the influence.
As of January 1, fines for traffic violations will increase because it is based on the Consumer Price Index and varies yearly.
For instance, the highest penalty, currently ¢293,000, will go to about ¢306,000. These severe fines (Type A) apply to those who drive more than 120 miles per hour with a suspended license, make a U-turn in a prohibited area, or other larger offenses. Lesser fines (Type E) that normally start at ¢21,000 will be raised to ¢22,000. (Amelia Rueda)
