The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The United Nations declared as part of the International Day of Human Rights, Costa Rica must close gaps on issues such as discrimination, unemployment, education and inequality.

“Today is a good day to take a deep breath and strengthen our will to take on the big challenges that the country needs to address,” said the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Costa Rica, Yoriko Yasukawa, in a statement.

The pending challenges of Costa Rica reported by the United Nations is limited access to decent jobs, because one in five households are living in poverty now, and the fact that 26% of employees in the private sector receive wages below the minimum wage.

On the subject of education, only 4 out of 10 children who start school get to finish high school, noting this as a limit for young people who aspire to good jobs to overcome poverty.

“This data reminds us that the construction of a society based on respect for the rights of all is precisely the responsibility of all,” Yasukawa said.

However the UN also highlighted the country’s progress and commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“The fact that a small country without major natural resources has built lasting peace and democracy and living with high levels of well-being is the result of a collective decision by the Costa Rican society, and a sustained effort to turn that decision into concrete progress,” finished Yasukawa.
