The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The initiative of some Legislative members to reduce the state budget, including the Special Fund for Higher Education is the reason for the demonstration of students and academic authorities who gathered outside of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) to march to the Legislative Assembly.

The fund could see a reduction of up to 3.5%, according to the academic authorities, and would affect the four state universities: UCR, the Technological Institute of Costa Rica (TEC), UNED and UNA.

As explained by Henning Jensen, director of the University of Costa Rica (UCR), this march is to demand that the agreement with the Executive Branch is respected and that the budget was agreed for 2015 is maintained.

Alejandro Madrigal, president of the Federation of Students of UCR, also said that government support is an important factor to make sure that the fight to keep the budget of the university is necessary; not only for the financial stability of the university but in regards to issues such as scholarships and other benefits for the academic development of students.

The protest also has the support of representatives from the National Association of Teachers (Ande), and representatives of the National Council of Rectors (Conare).
