The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – On June 8, 2015, Costa Rica President Luis Guillermo Solís addressed the UN in Geneva. Solis called on the world’s developed nations to understand the importance and value of providing more economic support to developing countries to reduce global climate change impact.

Solis said the burden to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is on tropical countries like Costa Rica.

It is these tropical countries where a majority of biosequestration takes place. Biosequestration is the capture and storage of the atmospheric greenhouse gas carbon dioxide by the natural biological processes.

Solís was pointed in expressing his opinion saying, “We developing countries cannot continue subsidizing emissions from the countries who pollute the most”. Solis also said the biggest polluters should accept emission quotas that will be set by the upcoming U.N. Climate Change Conference in Paris.

President Solís comments were timely as they coincide with a meeting of the Group of Seven nations in Bonn, Germany, which is discussing global climate change. The final document to be produced by Bonn talks is to reflect commitments from 195 countries to meet the challenges of climate change, and lay a foundation to provide aid to vulnerable and important economies from 2020.
